The Story of Christmas in words and music, with Andrew Cruickshank and The Saint Martin Singers. ‘God rest you merry’, a daily programme of readings and music for Christmas week, was first broadcast in the BBC Home Service in 1961 and has been repeated in various forms over the years since then. Now, with this recording, listeners can hear again the series of programmes as a whole, including some of their favourite poems and carols. The Saint Martin Singers date back to 1942, and owe their origin to a small band of fire-watchers at the church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Among the things which the Singers enjoy most, and have pioneered, are their programmes of music interwoven with poetry and prose to illustrate a theme, of which those you can hear on this record are examples in miniature. Christmas is always the most popular theme of all because the story of the Nativity has inspired the best in writers and musicians ever since St. Luke wrote the first narrative poem. 1. The work of the photographer, theatrical designer, narcissist, snob, careerist, and exceptionally talented Cecil Beaton (1904-1980), including 18,000 vintage prints, negatives and transparencies, contact sheets and 45 books of cuttings are at the Victoria & Albert Museum. They have all been brilliantly culled for the alluring and significant exhibition of some of Beaton´s royal portraits, billed as A Diamond Jubilee Celebration. Sir Roy Strong put Beaton firmly back on the map after he had gone out of fashion with a dazzling 1968 compilation at the National Portrait Gallery. He is firmly of the view that Beaton´s imagery of the royals saved the royals as far as the public were concerned after the debacle of the abdication. Indeed, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother wrote to Beaton in 1963 thanking him for ´´producing us as really quite nice and real people´´. ´´Producing´´ is the operative verb: Beaton staged the royals. The V&A´s presentation shows us just how much Beaton has made his view of the royals ours. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Denise Kahn. Is The Wire better than Breaking Bad? Is Cheers better than Seinfeld? What´s the best high school show ever made? Why did Moonlighting really fall apart? Was the Arrested Development Netflix season brilliant or terrible? For 20 years - since they shared a TV column at Tony Soprano´s hometown newspaper - critics Alan Sepinwall and Matt Zoller Seitz have been debating these questions and many more, but it all ultimately boils down to this: What´s the greatest TV show ever? That debate reaches an epic conclusion in TV (the Book). Sepinwall and Seitz have identified and ranked the 100 greatest scripted shows in American TV history. Using a complex, obsessively all-encompassing scoring system, they´ve created a pantheon of top TV shows, each accompanied by essays delving into what made these shows great. From vintage classics like The Twilight Zone and I Love Lucy to modern masterpieces like Mad Men and Friday Night Lights, from huge hits like All in the Family and ER to short-lived favorites like Firefly and Freaks and Geeks, TV (the Book) brings the triumphs of the small screen together in one amazing compendium. Sepinwall and Seitz´s argument has ended. Now it´s time for yours to begin! Mal has his own share of closet skeletons, including a family he doesn´t talk to and a dead wife he sometimes does, and he´s gone without romance for years. He works hard to convince Luke he´s worth more than a casual fling and asks for nothing in return, but Luke needs a relationship of equals. Kate Martinelli has seen her share of peculiar things as a San Francisco cop but never anything quite like this: an ornate Victorian sitting room straight out of a Sherlock Holmes story - complete with violin, tobacco-filled Persian slipper, and gunshots in the wallpaper that spell out the initials of the late queen. Philip Gilbert was a true Holmes fanatic, from his antiquated decor to his vintage wardrobe. And no mere fan of fiction´s great detective but a leading expert with a collection of priceless memorabilia - a collection some would kill for. And perhaps someone did: in his collection is a century-old manuscript purportedly written by Holmes himself - a manuscript that eerily echoes details of Gilbert´s own murder. Now, with the help of her partner, Al Hawkin, Kate must follow the convoluted trail of a killer - one who may have trained at the feet of the greatest mind of all times. 1. Language: English.
